ct The paper
starts out by
discussing
postindustrial
work as it is
viewed in the
current
sociology of
work. This
presentation
forms the
background for
a discussion
of the forms
of work and
organization
to be found in
small
contracting
enterprises in
forestry in
Germany. For
this, firstly,
the connection
between
decreasing
employment in
the state
forestry
administration
and
out-sourcing
of forestry
work as well
as the history
of forestry
contracting
are described.
The second
part focuses
on
characteristic
s of work and
organization
in small
forestry
contracting
enterprises,
based on
qualitative
interviews and
discussed with
the help of
newer
approaches
from the
sociology of
work. Whereas
on the one
hand common
characteristic
s between work
in forestry
contracting
enterprises
and
post-industria
l work can be
observed, on
the other hand
many phenomena
can reasonably
be explained
by reference
to traditions
of rural work
in small
family
enterprises.
In conclusion,
the observed
forms of work
and
organization
can only be
explained by
combining the
effects of
global markets
and rural
traditions.

questions have
been raised
concerning the

Drawing on
theoretical

we develop a
framework to
evaluate
communitylevel
stakeholders'
potential
suitability
for engagement
in
comanagement.
Four criteria
are assessed:
stake in the
resource,
discount rate,
social capital
and capacity
(leadership,
organizational
, enforcement
of rules and
knowledge).
Inclusion of
local actors
who fit the
framework in a
governance

could lead to
more
sustainable
outcomes. We
tested this

440-446.In
forest
planning, an
understanding
of the spatial
relationships
between
compartments
has become an
increasingly
important
issue.
Effective
approaches
must,
therefore, be
developed that
include
consideration
of spatial
relationships
in planning
models.
Existing
approaches,
based on
numerical
optimization,
tend to lack
the means
effectively to
include
spatial
considerations
. Further,
many suggested
approaches
have focused
on ways to
include
adjacency
constraints or
green-up
constraints in
forest
planning.
However, in
order to
maintain the
biodiversity
in the forest,
methods
dealing with,
for instance,
the problem of
fragmentation
of old
forests, also
have to be
developed. In
this paper,
the issue of
fragmentation
is addressed
and
incorporated
into long-term
forest
planning. The
approach is to
attempt to
minimize the
outer
perimeter of
areas of old
forest. The
model
presented is
formulated on
the basis of
mixed integer
programming,
and solved
with a branch
and bound
algorithm. A
data set
consisting of
924 stands was
used to
examine the
model, which
was then
evaluated with
different
requirements
for the degree
of clustering.
The results
indicate that
the model is
effective for
the clustering
of old forest
stands and
that it can be
solved within
a reasonable
time despite
the large
number of
constraints
and variables.
In the case
study the loss
in net present
value as a
result of
including the
issue of
fragmentation
was a few
percent.

Spatially
explicit
harvest
scheduling
models that
can promote
the
development of
dynamic mature
forest patches
have been
proposed in
the past. This
paper
introduces a
formulation
that extends
these models
by allowing
the total
perimeter of
the patches to
be constrained
or minimized.
Test run
results
suggest that
the proposed
model can
produce
solutions with
fewer, larger,
and more
compact
patches. In
addition,
patches are
more likely to
be temporally
connected with
this
formulation.
Methods for
identifying
the tradeoffs
between the
net present
value of the
forest and the
size and
perimeter of
the evolving
patches are
demonstrated
for a
hypothetical
forest.
